STATEMENT AND SIX-FIGURE AD BUY: Mitch McConnell Must Follow His Own Precedent and Not Push Through a Supreme Court Nominee in an Election Year

Fix Our Senate

Today, Fix Our Senate released the following statement from Senior Advisor Eli Zupnick on the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the age of 87:

“We express our deepest condolences for Justice Ginsburg’s family and loved ones. Justice Ginsburg was a historic trailblazer who never shied away from a fight. For 27 years on the Supreme Court, she wrote the story of a Constitution for all Americans, fighting to make real the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in every community. Justice Ginsburg fought to give women, workers, and all who had been pushed aside and marginalized a voice in our system of justice and a level playing field in America.

“Now, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell must abide by his own rule and not try to rush a nominee through so close to an election and right before the American people have an opportunity to weigh in. To do otherwise would be an absolute and unforgivable affront to Justice Ginsburg’s legacy, her clearly stated last wishes, and the precedent McConnell himself created four years ago. In 2016, when there was a Supreme Court vacancy, Senator McConnell took a strong stance: the Senate would not consider a nominee this close to an election. McConnell must follow his own rule here and let the American people decide who should fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat.”

Fix Our Senate announced a new six-figure ad buy tonight to remind the American people — and any Republicans considering breaking their word — of the clearly stated “McConnell Rule.”
